This course equips staff with the skills to support people who are experiencing or have survived domestic abuse where alcohol or other substances are part of the picture. Drawing on real-life case examples, it explores the links between trauma, substance use and coercive control.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognise patterns of abuse and control in situations involving alcohol or substance use.
  • Understand how trauma, shame, and substance use intersect in survivors’ lives.
  • Explore practical, non-judgemental ways to build trust and offer support.
  • Know when and how to refer to specialist domestic abuse and addiction services.
