An Introduction to Trauma-Informed Approaches
An introduction to trauma-informed practice, exploring how trauma can affect behaviour and relationships and how principles such as safety, trust, choice and empowerment can support compassionate, person-centred care.
Course Overview & Practice Context
This training course is designed to introduce health and social care professionals to trauma-informed approaches. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of trauma, its effects on individuals, and how to apply trauma-informed principles within everyday professional practice.
The course explores what trauma is, how it can affect a person’s thoughts, feelings, behaviour, relationships and sense of safety, and why individuals may respond to situations in different ways. Participants will consider the importance of recognising trauma without making assumptions or requiring individuals to disclose personal experiences.
Learners will be introduced to the core principles of trauma-informed practice, including safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment and a recognition of the impact of trauma. The course will also explore how communication, the professional environment and organisational practices can either support or undermine a person’s sense of safety and control.
By the end of the course, learners will have a clearer understanding of trauma and the principles of trauma-informed practice, alongside practical approaches for creating safer, more respectful and supportive interactions. They will be better equipped to apply these principles within their own roles and contribute to a more compassionate, person-centred approach to care and support.
