Substance use can affect housing stability, increase vulnerability, and sometimes contribute to conflict or safeguarding concerns. This practical course gives frontline staff the skills and confidence to respond to alcohol- and drug-related risks within a housing context while maintaining a person-centred, non-judgemental and trauma-informed approach.

Participants will explore how substance use can affect behaviour, decision-making, relationships and engagement with housing services. The course provides practical tools for identifying and assessing risk, recognising signs of escalating situations, responding appropriately to incidents, and maintaining clear professional boundaries.

The course also considers safeguarding responsibilities, effective communication, de-escalation strategies, partnership working and appropriate referral or escalation pathways. Participants will learn how to balance the need to manage risk and protect individuals, staff and others while continuing to promote dignity, autonomy and positive engagement.

By the end of the course, learners will have a practical framework for managing situations where substance use is a factor, enabling them to respond more confidently, consistently and safely in their day-to-day housing practice.
